II Picos Snow Running – Championship of Spain of Snow Shoes

La II Picos Snow Running Championship of Spain of Snow Shoes took place on 22 of March of 2015 in the cable car of Fuente Dé.

The race entailed 10km with a 520m positive elevation around the Lakes of Lloroza and Áliva. The state of the snow was hard, great for a competition of these characteristics.

The organization had the right to modify the course depending on meteorological conditions on the day of the competition, but with the maintaining of competition and security in mind, not only for the participants, but for the members of the organization who take part in the competition.

Saturday the 21st of March:

17:30 – Speech by  Roberto Ruiz Revuelta, champion of Spain of Snow shoes and Champion of the I Picos Snow Running, who talked about the snow shoe competition, as well as his experience in the world championship of snowshoes which took place on the 31st of January in Quebec ,Canadá.

19:00 Speech by  Fran Gutierrez “Piñera” champion of the Travesera Integral Picos de Europa 2014 holding the record for the competition including many other successes in the area of the mountain.  He spoke about Alpine climbing, ultra running and also about the record  of Ring of Winter Peaks from this past year where alongside Manuel Merillas he managed to beat the record held in this extreme activity which unites all the refuges of the European Peaks

In regards to the Ring of Peaks, there was a small forum with Fran Piñera, to answer questions about this interesting subject.

20:30 Information meeting about the race: the last indications about the race, weather conditions, equipment, etc. were given.

-Gloves and glasses were required.

In the same office starting at 17:30 the participants could pick up their dorsal along with the runners bag:

-Participants had to leave their license FEDME with the organization, unless they were going to participate in the open category.

-Participants left a deposit of 10 euros which was returned upon the return of the dorsal vest after the race.

For those who could not pick up the dorsal vest on the 21st of March, they had the option to pick it up in the cafeteria of the upper station of the cable car on the day of the race and up to 11:30 in the morning.

SUNDAY, 22nd of March:

10:00 The participants used the cable car to reach the upper station as early as possible to avoid delays at the start of the race. It was imperative for participants to take their dorsal vests so that the staff of the cable car can identify them as participants of the race.

Like we said before the dorsal vests could also be picked up on Sunday from 10:00 y 11:30 a.m. in the cafeteria of the upper station of the cable car.

In the upper station there was a wardrobe available to leave backpacks and bags with a change of clothes.

12:00 the beginning of the race was from the upper station of the cable car of Fuente Dé

14:30 – Prizes were given in the following categories with the 2000 euros from FEDME:

  • Masculine and Feminine category:  Cadet, Junior y Senior.
  • Masculine and Feminine sub-category: Hopeful and Veteran
  • Cadet Category: 15, 16 and 17 years of age, those who do not turn 18 in the year of the competition.
  • Junior Category: 18, 19 and 20 years of age, those who do not turn 21 in the year of the competition.
  • Senior Category:  starting at 21 years of age in the year of the competition.
  • Promise Sub category: 21, 22 and 23 years of age, those who do not turn 24 in the year of the competition.
  • Veteran Sub category: starting at 40 years of age in feminine and 45 in masculine in the year of the competition.
  • So that a category can exist there must be at least 4 participants or the category will be considered deserted.

Runners in the open category (not federated) were not eligible for the monetary prizes of the FEDME although they were able to enter the Lebaniego category or have a place on the podium of certain categories, without the recognition of the FEDME.

We remind you that the inscription can include lunch on Sunday 22 of March in the breathtaking cafeteria of the upper station of the cable car for an additional 11 euros.
